Well, There are several lakhs of people who aspire for UPSC CSE every year but success ratio is ver very less than 1. Aspirants prepare through out the year and faces several ups and downs in the journey. During the downs it automatically comes into the mind that you have taken the wrong decision rather u could have set a back up first.
So if one goes for back up first then some people set it with final year of the graduation but some takes a few years after graduation. If you get it with final year than take it otherwise don't waste your precious time after the graduation as pressure build on you as age factor comes into consideration and relatives and neighbours will not let you prepare with free mind and unnecessary pressure builds up.
So if you want to prepare for UPSC CSE just start preparing as early as possible and if possible clear your basics during the graduation. This would help you to learn quick when u start reading bunch of books. Don't think much of alternatives as if you are really hard working person and having faith in youself you get through it though it may take few years. This exam need hardwork and more and more practise.
Never follow the toppers strategy blindly. Only follow the things which suits you as every individuals have different set of strength and weakness.
